What is pool plaster and why is it important?
Pool plaster is the waterproof layer applied to the concrete shell of your pool. It seals the concrete, prevents water from leaking into the ground, and provides a smooth, aesthetically pleasing surface for swimmers to enjoy.
How do I know if my pool needs replastering?
Common signs that you need new plaster include a rough or sandpaper-like texture that scrapes skin, severe and stubborn staining, visible cracks, peeling, or bald spots where the underlying concrete (gunite or shotcrete) is showing through.
How long does a standard pool plaster finish last?
A standard white plaster finish typically lasts between 7 to 10 years, highly dependent on how well the water chemistry is maintained. Upgraded finishes, such as quartz or pebble, can easily last 15 to 20 years or more with proper care.
What is the difference between standard plaster, quartz, and pebble finishes?
Standard plaster is a smooth, classic mixture of white cement and crushed marble. Quartz finishes add colored quartz crystals to the mix for added durability and a speckled visual effect. Pebble finishes use small, smooth stones instead of marble, offering maximum longevity, a textured feel, and a striking, natural look.
How long does the pool plastering process take?
The actual plaster application usually takes 1 to 2 days. However, the complete project—including draining the pool, thoroughly prepping the shell, plastering, and refilling—typically takes about a week to complete, weather permitting.
Can I change the color of my pool water with new plaster?
Yes! The color of your pool’s interior dictates the shade of the water. White plaster yields bright, classic blue water, while gray, black, or blue-tinted plaster finishes can create deep, lagoon-like or vibrant ocean-blue hues.
Do I need to drain the pool for a plaster job?
Yes, the pool must be completely drained so our renovation team can chip away the old, failing surface, prep the underlying concrete shell, and apply the new plaster effectively in a dry environment.
What is the "curing" process for new pool plaster?
Unlike regular concrete, pool plaster cures underwater. Once the plaster is applied, the pool must be filled immediately. For the first 28 days, the pool goes through a startup period requiring daily brushing and very precise water chemistry balancing to ensure the finish cures evenly without staining or scaling.
Does Golden Star Pool Construction help with the startup process?
Absolutely. We will guide you through the critical startup process to ensure the longevity of your new finish. We provide clear, step-by-step instructions on brushing routines and chemical adjustments so your pool starts off perfectly.
