Pool Coping FAQs

Have questions about replacing or installing new pool coping? Read through our most common Dallas customer inquiries to learn about materials, timelines, and the renovation process.
What exactly is pool coping?
Pool coping is the protective lip or cap at the top edge of your pool wall. It separates the pool structure from the surrounding deck, provides a safe edge for swimmers to hold onto, and directs splash-out water away from the pool shell.
Coping seals the concrete shell and prevents water from getting behind the pool tile, which can cause cracking and severe structural damage. It also protects the pool wall from weather elements and gives the pool a finished, attractive look.
Travertine is currently the most popular choice due to its modern look and heat-resistant properties. Flagstone, brick, and poured concrete are also highly sought after for their durability and distinct aesthetic qualities.
Signs of failing coping include loose or rocking stones, crumbling mortar joints, cracks in the material itself, or visible water damage and tile detachment just beneath the coping line.
Yes, in many cases, our crews can carefully remove and replace the coping stones without damaging the adjacent decking. However, if your deck is also failing, it is usually more cost-effective to renovate both simultaneously.
It doesn't have to match exactly, but it should complement the deck. Many homeowners choose a contrasting material (like natural stone coping paired with a concrete deck) to create a striking visual border around the water.
A typical coping replacement takes about 3 to 5 days, depending on the size of your pool, the chosen material, and whether the waterline tile is being replaced at the same time.
Usually, we only need to lower the water level slightly (just below the tile line) to safely remove the old material and mortar in the new coping without debris falling into a full pool.
Maintenance includes regularly checking the expansion joint seal (mastic) between the coping and the deck, keeping the stone clean of debris, and applying a stone sealer every few years to protect against chemical wear.
Saltwater pools can be tough on certain soft stones over time. If you have a salt system, we recommend harder stones like travertine, or ensuring softer stones like flagstone are properly and regularly sealed to prevent erosion.
